Last weekend, I was able to go on an unforgettable trip to an area that is very important for the Swiss watchmaking industry: the Jura & Three Lakes region. Find out why the area in and around the Jura Mountains has made Swiss watchmaking history in this blog post.
The City of Le Locle
Unser Trip startete in Le Locle. Diese kleine Stadt im Kanton Neuenburg, welche auch als Geburtsstätte der Uhrenindustrie genannt wird, war und ist ein Dreh und Angel Punkt der Uhrenindustrie. Aufgrund der erhöhten Lage von Le Locle, fast 1000 m.ü.M., waren die Bauern des 17. Jahrhunderts mit langen und harschen Wintern konfrontiert. Während dieser Zeit begannen die damaligen Bauern einzelne Bauteile für Uhren zu erstellen um diese dann an Uhrmachern, wie zum Beispiel Daniel Jean-Richard, zu verkaufen.
Our trip started in Le Locle. This small town in the canton of Neuchâtel, sometimes called the birthplace of the watch industry, was and still is a hub of the watch industry. Due to Le Locle’s elevated position, almost 1000 metres above sea level, the farmers of the 17th century were faced with long and harsh winters. During this cold period, the farmers of the time began to make components for clocks, which they then sold to clockmakers such as Daniel Jean-Richard.
Château de Monts
Einen spannenden Einblick in die faszinierende Geschichte der Uhrmacherei bietet das Uhren Museum von Le Locle. Im Château de Monts sind neben imposanten Uhrensammlungen zahlreiche Relikte aus der Vergangenheit ausgestellt, welche die Geschichte des Uhrmacherhandwerks dokumentieren.
The watch museum in Le Locle offers an exciting insight into the fascinating history of watchmaking. In addition to impressive watch collections, numerous relics from the past are exhibited in the Château de Monts, documenting the history of watchmaking.
Maison du Bois
Das Maison Du Bois ist eines der ältesten Häuser der Uhrmacherei der Schweiz und darin befindet sich ein charmant eingerichtetes Bed & Breakfast. Auch wir hatten das Vergnügen eine Nacht in diesem historischem Haus aus dem Jahre 1785 zu verbringen.
The Maison Du Bois is one of the oldest watchmaking houses in Switzerland and inside it is a charmingly furnished bed & breakfast. We also had the pleasure of spending a night in this historic house dating back to 1785.
Die Übernachtung und das Frühstück ist dabei Teil der Uhrmacher-Erfahrung von Explore Swiss Watchmaking, einem Aufenthalt speziell für Uhrenliebhaber. Weitere Programmpunkte werden im Verlaufe des Blogpost genauer erläutert.

The Zenith Factory
Am nächsten Morgen ging es dann für uns weiter in das Industrieviertel von Le Locle. Le Locle ist der Ursprungsort von vielen bekannten Uhrenmarken wie Favre-Leuba, Tissot, Ulysse Nardin und so auch von Zenith.
The next morning, we went on to the industrial district of Le Locle. Le Locle is the birthplace of many famous watch brands such as Favre-Leuba, Tissot, Ulysse Nardin and Zenith.
Auf einer geführten Tour durch die Fabrikhallen von Zenith erhielten wir spannende Einblicke in die Entwicklungs-, Design- und Herstellungsprozesse der Firma.
On a guided tour through the Zenith factory halls, we were able to enjoy exciting insights into the development, design and manufacturing processes of the company.
Obwohl über die Jahre viele Arbeitsschritte durch moderne Maschinen abgelöst wurden, findet immer noch ein Grossteil der Herstellung von Hand statt.
Although many work steps have been replaced by modern machines over the years, a large part of the production still is done by hand.
Zenith bietet diese Besichtigungstouren einmal wöchentlich an oder auf Anfrage für Gruppen.
Zenith offers these tours once a week or on request for groups.
La Chaux-de-Fonds
Nach der Besichtigung der Zenith Uhrenmanufaktur, ging es für uns weiter in die nächste Uhrmacherstadt La Chaux-de-Fonds.
After visiting the Zenith watch manufactory, we travelled on to the next watchmaking town, La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Ferme des Brandt
Hungrig vom Vormittag freuten wir uns umso mehr auf eine leckere, traditionelle und lokale Mahlzeit im Ferme des Brandt.
Hungry from the morning, we were, even more, looking forward to a delicious, traditional and local meal at the Ferme des Brandt.
Die Verpflegung im Ferme des Brandt ist ebenfalls Teil der Uhrmacher Erfahrung von Explore Swiss Watchmaking.
Lunch at the Ferme des Brandt is also part of the Explore Swiss Watchmaking experience.
City Tour in La Chaux-de-Fonds
Am Nachmittag machten wir uns auf den Weg um die Stadt La Chaux-de-Fonds zu erkunden. Dabei setzten wir auf die virtuellen Begleiter in Form von Tablets, welche bei Espace de l’urbanisme horloger erhältlich sind. Die interaktive Stadt Tour führt zu allen für die Uhrmacherindustrie wichtigen und historischen Orten quer durch die Stadt.
In the afternoon, we set out to explore the city of La Chaux-de-Fonds. We used the virtual guides in the form of tablets available from Espace de l’urbanisme horloger. The interactive city tour takes you to all the important and historic sites for the watchmaking industry.
Nach Abschluss der Tour machten wir beim Internationalen Uhrenmuseum noch einen Besuch, in welchem mehr als 4500 Ausstellungstücke zu bestaunen sind.
After completing the tour, we paid a visit to the International Watch Museum, where more than 4500 exhibits can be admired.
Watchmaking Workshop at Centre Horloger
Als kröndender Abschluss unseres Aufenthaltes in La Chaux-de-Fonds ging es zu einem Uhrmacher Workshop im Centre Horloger. Unter professioneller Leitung bekamen wir eine Einführung in die Funktionsweise einer mechanischen Uhr.
As a crowning finale to our stay in La Chaux-de-Fonds, we went to a watchmaking workshop at the Centre Horloger. Under professional guidance, we received an introduction to the functioning of a mechanical watch.
Nach der Theorie kam die Praxis und wir durften uns selbst im Handwerk der Uhrmacherei versuchen.
After the theory came the practice and we were allowed to try our hand at watchmaking ourselves.
Zum Glück war ein grosser Teil der Uhr bereits vormontiert, denn für ein paar Zahnrädchen und Zeiger benötigte ich fast zwei Stunden. Dadurch wird einem erst bewusst, wie viel Zeit und Know-how in so einem mechanischen Zeitmesser steckt.
Fortunately, a large part of the clock was already pre-assembled, because it took me almost two hours to assemble a few gears and clock hands. This makes you realise how much time and know-how goes into such a mechanical timepiece.
Das Zusammenbauen der Uhr war der letzte Teil unserer Uhrmacher Erfahrung von Explore Swiss Watchmaking. Dieses Package ist jedoch nur eines von vielen und die Packages gibt es auch in den unterschiedlichsten Kombinationen und Ausführungen.
Assembling the watch was the last part of our Explore Swiss Watchmaking experience. However, this package is only one of many, and the packages also come in a wide variety of combinations and variations.
The City of Neuchâtel
Um unseren Trip abzurunden, ging es danach noch auf ein leckeres Mittagessen, gefolgt von einer Stadtführung durch die Belle Epoque von Neuchâtel.
To round off our trip, we then went for a delicious lunch, followed by a guided tour of Neuchâtel’s Belle Epoque.

Auf der Führung lernten wir interessante Fakten über diese wunderbare Stadt und ihrer prunkvoller Vergangenheit, was zu einem grossen Teil auf das boomende Uhrengeschäft zurückzuführen ist.
On the guided tour we learned interesting facts about this wonderful city and its magnificent past, which is largely due to the booming watch business.
