Petra – The Rock City
Die wohl berühmteste Turisten Attraktion in Jordanien dürfte die in den Stein gemeisselte Stadt Petra sein. Die Stadt die seit 1985 teil des Unseco Welt Kultur Erbe ist, lockt jedes Jahr bis zu einer Milionen Besucher an, und dies zu recht. Seit 2007 zählt die Stadt auch zu einem der neuen Sieben Welt Wunder.
Probably the most famous tourist attraction in Jordan is the stone carved city of Petra. The city, which since 1985 is part of the Unseco World Cultural Heritage, attracts every year up to a million visitors, and quite deservedly so. Since 2007, the city is also one of the new Seven World Wonders.
Um zur verborgenen Stadt zu gelangen, führt ein schmaler Weg durch meterhohe Felswände und plötzlich steht sie da: die Schatzkammer von Petra. Vor über 2000 Jahren wurde sie in den pinken Fels gehauen und stahlt auch heute noch eine besondere Aura aus.
To reach the hidden city, a narrow path leads through meter-high rock walls and suddenly there it is: the treasury of Petra. It was carved into the pink rock over 2000 years ago and still exudes a special aura today.
Der Platz vor der Schatzkammer kann ziemlich schnell voll werden. Lokale Beduinen bieten dir gegen ein kleines Trinkgeld an, dich auf erhöhte Spots im Felsen zu führen, von wo man einen besseren Blick auf die Schatzkammer hat. Wer jedoch gut auf den Beinen ist, und nichts gegen einen 1.5 stündigen Fussmarsch hat, dem empfehle ich den Weg bis zum Kloster aufsich zu nehmen. Der Weg führt durch eindrückliche Landschaften vorbei und am Ende belohnt einem eine noch grösseres in den Stein gemeisseltes Meisterwerk. Ausserdem hat es beim Kloster zahlreiche Aussichtsplatformen, welche frei zugäglich sind.
The space in front of the treasury can get crowded pretty quickly. Local Bedouins offer you for a small tip to lead you to elevated spots in the rock, from where you have a better view of the Treasury. However, if you are good on your feet and don’t mind a 1.5 hour walk, I recommend taking the path to the Monastery. The path leads through impressive landscapes and at the end you will be rewarded by an even bigger masterpiece carved in the stone. In addition, the Monastery has numerous viewing platforms, which are freely accessible.
Where to Stay?
Ich bevorzuge es solch stark besuchten Attraktionen möglichst früh zu erkundigen, wenn der Menschenandrang noch nicht so gross ist. Daher war ich mit dem Mövenpick Hotel in Petra sehr zufrieden. Das Frühstücksbuffet startet bereits um 6 Uhr und um zum Eingang zu Petra zu gelangen muss man wortwörtlich nur die Strasse überqueren.
I prefer to explore such heavily visited attractions as early as possible, when the crowds are not yet so large. Therefore, I was very satisfied with the Mövenpick Hotel in Petra. The breakfast buffet starts already at 6 am and to get to the entrance to Petra you literally just have to cross the street.
Wadi Rum
Die wohl eindrücklichsten Landschaften in Jordanien findet man im Wadi Rum. Diese wunderbare Wüstenlandschaft darf auf keinen Fall auf deinem Trip nach Jordanine fehlen. Doch nicht nur Abenteuerlustige und Naturbegeisterte zieht es in die Wadi Rum Wüste. Nein, auch Hollywood hat er hier hin verschlage. Es ist also gut möglich, dass du den einen oder anderen Felsen bereits aus Filmen wie Star Wars, Der Marsianer oder Transformers kennst.
Probably the most impressive landscapes in Jordan can be found in Wadi Rum. This wonderful desert landscape should not be missed on your trip to Jordan. But not only adventurous and nature lovers are drawn to the Wadi Rum desert. No, Hollywood has also been drawn here. So it’s quite possible that you already know one or the other rock from movies like Star Wars, The Martian or Transformers.
Um nicht alles durch den Sand wandern zu müssen, erkundeten wir die Wüste mit einer Jeep Safari. Die Landschaft war so eindrücklich, dass meine Kamera bis und mit Sonnenuntergang beinahe durchgängig am laufen war.
In order not to have to hike everything through the sand, we explored the desert with a jeep safari. The landscape was so impressive that my camera was running almost continuously until and with sunset.

Da sich einen grossen Teil der Wadi Rum Wüste in einem Naturschutzgebiet befindet, finden sich in dieser Umgebung anstelle von Hotels zahlreiche Wüsten Camps. Damit du gleich mitten drin bist, empfehle ich dir für deine Übernachtungen in Wadi Rum eines dieser Luxury Glampings zu buchen.
Since a large part of the Wadi Rum desert is located in a nature reserve, there are numerous desert camps instead of hotels in this area. So that you are right in the middle of it, I recommend you to book one of these Luxury Glampings for your overnight stays in Wadi Rum.
Jerash
Rund 40 Kilometer nördlich von Amman befindet sich die antike und historische Stadt Jerash. Zu entdecken gibt es hier zahlreiche Ausgrabungen und renovierte Bauten. Die ältesten Spuren von menschlichem Leben führen über 8000 Jahre zurück.
About 40 kilometers north of Amman is the ancient and historic city of Jerash. There are numerous excavations and renovated buildings to discover here. The oldest traces of human life date back over 8000 years.
Canyoning in Wadi Mujib
Wer nach ein paar Tagen Sightseeing mal wieder etwas Action vertragen könnte, der muss unbedingt einen Halt in Wadi Mujib einplanen. Dort kannst du dir eine Schwimmwesten mieten und dann geht es auf eigene Faust Fluss aufwärts. Um schwierige Stellen zu überwinden gibt es fest installierte Seil- und Leitervorrichtungen. Auch stehen an diesen Stelle lokale Guides zur Hilfe.
If you could use some action after a few days of sightseeing, you should definitely plan a stop in Wadi Mujib. There you can rent a life jacket and then go up the river on your own. To overcome difficult places there are fixed rope and ladder devices. There are also local guides to help you in these places.
Oben angekommen erwartet dich einen imposanten Wasserfall. Danach geht es Flussabwärts wieder zurück. An einigen Stellen kann man sich gemütlich Treiben lassen oder man findet eine natürliche Wasserrutschbahn.
At the top, an impressive waterfall awaits you. After that, you go downstream back again. In some places you can drift comfortably or you will find a natural water slide.
The Dead Sea
Ein weiters Wasserabenteuer, welches auf keinen Fall im Reiseprogramm fehlen darf, ist einen Gang zum Toten Meer.
Da das Wasser im Toten Meer viel schneller verdampft als in herkömmlichen Ozeane, weisst das Tote Meer einen Saltzgehalt auf von ca. 34% auf. Dies ist das 10-fache des durchschnittlichen Saltzgehaltes der restlichen Ozeane. Durch den hohen Saltzgehalt erlangt das Wasser eine viel höhere Dichte als herkömmliches Wasser, was sich wiederum auf eine verstärkte Auftriebskraft auswirkt. Kurz gesagt, im Toten Meer kannst du dich ohne jegliche Anstrengung über Wasser halten, was ein wirklich lustiges und faszinierendes Erlebnis ist.

Weiter darf die Hauptstadt Jordaniens nicht in deinem Programm fehlen. Amman ist eine der ältesten Siedlungen der Welt und präsentiert sich als lebendige Metropole voller Kontraste – ein Schmelztiegel von Tradition und Moderne inmitten einer hügeligen Landschaft, mit der Wüste auf der einen und dem fruchtbaren Jordantal auf der anderen Seite.
Wer die historische Seite der Hauptstadtd erkundigen möchte, dem empfehle ich einen Gang zur Zitadelle von Amman. Von dort aus bietet sich auch einen wunderbaren Ausblick über die Stadt selbt.
Furthermore, the capital of Jordan must not be missing in your program. Amman is one of the oldest settlements in the world and presents itself as a lively metropolis full of contrasts – a melting pot of tradition and modernity in the middle of a hilly landscape, with the desert on one side and the fertile Jordan Valley on the other.
If you want to explore the historical side of the capital, I recommend a walk to the Citadel of Amman. From there you have a wonderful view over the city itself.
Where to Stay?
Das wohl schönste Hotel auf unserem Trip besuchten wir in Amman. Hier durften wir im Fairmont Amman nächtigen. Das Essen und die Zimmer waren einwandfrei und sehr zu empfehlen. Der Hoteleigene Pool über den Dächern Ammans ist ein weiteres Highlight von diesem Hotel.
The most beautiful hotel on our trip we visited in Amman. Here we were allowed to stay at the Fairmont Amman. The food and the rooms were impeccable and highly recommended. The hotel’s own pool above the rooftops of Amman is another highlight of this hotel.
Aquaba and the Red Sea
Wem das Tote Meer zu saltzig war, der wird sich über einen Besuch am Roten Meer freuen. Ganz anders als im Toten Meer, ist das Rote Meer einen Lebensraum zahlreicher Tieren und Korallen. Diese lassen sich am besten auf einer Schnorkel Safari bestaunen.
Die Meisten dieser Touren starten in Aquaba, eine sehr lebhafte Küstenstadt, wo sich auch zahlreiche Hotels und Unterkünfte befinden. Der Ideale ausgangspunkt also für deine Abenteuer am und im Roten Meer.
If the Dead Sea was too salty for you, you will be happy to visit the Red Sea. Quite different from the Dead Sea, the Red Sea is a habitat of numerous animals and corals. These can best be marveled at on a snorkel safari.

Flights from Switzerland
Aktuell fliegt die Airline Royal Jordanien zweimal Wöchentlich ab Zürich und Genf ohne Umsteigen nach Amman und zurück. Das Flugpersonal der Airline habe ich als äusserst zuvorkommend empfunden und die Bedienung und Betreung am Flughafen in Amman und in der Airport Lounge waren ausgezeichnet.
Currently, the airline Royal Jordan flies twice a week from Zurich and Geneva without changing to Amman and back. I have found the airline’s flight staff to be extremely courteous and the service and support at the airport in Amman and in the airport lounge were excellent.
